Permission...
Most new development requires the permission of the local planning authority (Argyll & Bute Council, Planning Department) before any work can commence.
The Town and Country Planning ( Scotland ) Act 1997 states that planning permission is required for any ‘development’. The definition of development is extremely wide-ranging and if a proposal falls within the definition, it will be classed as development and will normally need planning permission.
Some very minor developments, such as extending a patio or replacing a window, do not require the submission of a planning application. But it is always sensible to check first with the Planning Department of Argyll & Bute Council.
